Welcome to the Gestalt Training - NJ website!

We offer training in Gestalt therapy and theory for therapists and allied professionals in a 'hands-on' laboratory setting.

Founded by its Director, Nancy Bristol, MSW, LCSW, DCSW, in1990, the training is designed to meet the needs of people from various professional backgrounds interested in furthering their professional development. Ms. Bristol brings her more than 20 years of teaching, lecturing, supervising and workshop presentation experience to the North Central New Jersey area.

Additionally, weekend seminars in Gestalt training are offered in NJ for those interested in a personal growth experience and in conjunction to our training program. A sense of safety and comfort in a small group setting is stressed.

We are conveniently located in Westfield, NJ on both the Garden State Parkway and Route 22 corridors. We are also easily accessible to both bus and rail transportation.

About Gestalt

Philosophically, Gestalt Therapy differs from the traditional therapy modalities. It is both Humanistic and Holistic: Holistic in that it uses non-verbal somatic signs as tools for self discovery rather than cognition alone; Humanistic in that it doesn't presume that the therapist knows more than the client, The client is the expert on developing his or her awareness with the clinician simply acting as a guide to self-discovery.

Gestalt theory embraces the concept that 'the person in the situation' experiences an immediate and dynamic phenomenological event from which he or she can reorganize a belief, thus influencing behavioral change.

Stop for a moment. Chew on the last sentence you read, and notice what you feel as you reflect on it. Are you aware of any physical reaction anywhere in your body? What did you experience that allowed you to learn more about yourself? This is self investigation employing Gestalt technique.

Gestalt methodology employs techniques that elicit long buried feelings and illuminates obstacles or blocks to being fully alive. Further, rather then utilizing predetermined belief systems or abstract intellectualization, it encourages creativity in the present moment on the part of both the client & the clinician. It provides a theraputic environment that can be more interesting, dramatic and fun than traditional modalities. It is less isolating and mysterious. In addition to emphasizing feelings and heightened awareness, self responsibility is considered crucial. Because the modality can be intensely experiential, therapy and closure of issues is expedited.
